About Me

My name is Christoph. I am a designer and developer passionate about melding art and technology to create unique and seamless experiences.

My Services

I provide design services for websites, software user interfaces, icons and corporate identity. However, if your type of project should not be listed you still may contact me since I am always looking for the next challenge.

Design and Technology

During my high school years I started being interested in graphic design. Ever since I have been doing small design projects for myself, people I knew or companies that contacted me. In 2008, shortly after completing my master’s degree in Electrical Engineering and Information Technology at ETH Zurich, I started working for a startup company where I am responsible for software engineering and IT. From the work I have been doing there also emerged the interest in software development in general.

Having now been in contact with both worlds – graphic design and software development – I came to realize that a very important sweet spot can be found between those two arts. From my point of view it needs knowledge of both worlds to create exciting experiences and products. Only being good at art or technology alone does not enable a product unless of course it is solely based on pure graphic design like a logo or print artwork. However, as soon as the project has interactions with the technology world, it is of profound importance that design takes on a big role during the creation process. Great technology alone without any sense of design will never be successful.

Less is More

All my work evolves around the powerful principle of simplicity. The following quote from Steve Jobs sums it up nicely.

Simple can be harder than complex: You have to work hard to get your thinking clean to make it simple. But it’s worth it in the end because once you get there, you can move mountains.Steve Jobs

Using as little design as possible which in its essence is inherently clear and easy to understand makes a product useful. One should never add a feature just because one can. If something is not required or does not enable an integral part of a product, it should be left out. On the other hand, however, the few remaining aspects of a product have to be crafted to the highest possible level of precision and care to detail.

Of course I am not the first person thinking about how a product should be designed. Below you can see Dieter Rams’ 10 Principles of “Good Design”. From my point of view he is one of the best designers on earth. Years, or even decades after his products have been released, they still look and feel contemporary and inspire some of the most successful companies on the planet.

Good Design Is Innovative.
Good Design Makes a Product Useful.
Good Design Is Aesthetic.
Good Design Makes A Product Understandable.
Good Design Is Unobtrusive.
Good Design Is Honest.
Good Design Is Long-lasting.
Good Design Is Thorough Down to the Last Detail.
Good Design Is Environmentally Friendly.
Good Design Is as Little Design as Possible.
Dieter Rams
