Creating my Logo

Creating my logo was something that I really enjoyed. Of course a prerequisite for a logo was having a company name. Because romerdesign had to be a sole proprietorship company, my family name had to be part of it. Additionally I did not want to have a company name different from my website url. Therefore the choice was quite simple – the name romerdesign was born.

Shortly afterwards I began playing with possible logos. The first drafts were only text-based. I really liked the text-based logos because they looked simple and clean. However, in regard that at some point I needed an icon that would represent romerdesign, I quickly moved away from this type of logo. The brainstorming began.

I started by creating a list of requirements and concepts which my logo should fulfill and obey. The most important ones were:

  • Creates a link to the company name.
  • Has to be suitable for print and digital.
  • Clearly visible in the sizes of a 16×16 pixel icon as well as on the side of a New York skyscraper ;-).
  • Two-dimensional appearance.
  • Nature’s perfect shape – the circle – should play a key role.
  • Use the golden ratio as much as possible in order to communicate a sense of harmony.

Sketches

Having set the stage for drafts, I started drawing in my notebook. My ideas slowly converged at a circle having parts of the letters “rd” cut out of it. This looked quite ok but I was not yet happy with the result. In Photoshop I started playing around with the positioning of my letters. At some point I started aligning the “r” to the top left of my main circle. I noticed that the arc of the “r” now was a part of the outer circle. At that point, the moment of insight happened. I saw the arc of the “d” and combined that with the idea of using the outer circle as an integral part the “r”. And boom! My logo was born. I removed the unnecessary detail and introduced the golden rule scaling to the rest of the geometry and I was done.

In retrospect I think that I managed to reach all the goals I set myself when I started the design process and I am really happy with the result.
