Luxo Jr.

Luxo Jr. has been a very special project to me because it sparked my interest in graphic design. This was in 2004 – now about 10 years ago. Just for fun I gave myself the task to recreate Luxo Jr. which is a an animation created by John Lasseter in 1986. Luxo Jr. was the first animation of the today well known company called Pixar that brought us Academy Award winning movies like Toy Story or WALL·E. Because this was their first official animation, Pixar today still shows Luxo Jr. crushing the letter “i” in the Pixar logo at the beginning of all of their movies.

The project started off with me knowing very little about 3D modeling or 3D animation. Gradually I worked myself into the topic and started learning about 3D modeling, texturing as well as inverted kinematics in order to be able to bring the little lamp to life. About two weeks later I was done. The image above shows a finished rendering of my Luxo Jr. version. After this project I slowly started working on other computer graphic projects which paved the way to what I am doing today.

Under the following link you can have a look at the original Luxo Jr. which has been created by Pixar in 1986.
